4 Steps to a Successful Literacy Project

Order a Starter Kit. It contains everything you need to present the project to your club. You’ll get a sample of each of the materials offered.

Contact your local schools. If you decide that the project is a good fit for your club, reach out to your local schools administration and share the materials from the Starter Kit. Find out if the program is something that the school can welcome. Many schools find it to be complementary to their current curriculum. If your club and your schools agree to move forward, determine what grade levels are appropriate, which materials you would like to use, quantities needed, timing, etc. Most clubs take the project into the 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade levels.

Implement your program. After receiving your materials, take them into your local schools and do your presentation. There are many ways to do this. Generally, it is much like a Dictionary Project. Clubs give books, bookmarks, etc. to the students and introduce them to Rotary. If time allows, Rotarians read the story to the kids. NOTE: Some clubs that choose to do both The Four-Way Test and Service Above Self, do them in separate grades. For example, The Four-Way Test in grade 2 and Service Above Self in grade 3. If your club and school would like to do both in the same grade level, you might consider a Fall and Spring program.
